Programme summary

📅 Monday, 16 March 2026

Distributed leadership, evaluation and use of data

The first day opens the seminar with an international perspective on the challenges of distributed leadership and the use of data in education systems.

From 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. (in French), Romuald Normand (University of Strasbourg), France Gravelle (University of Quebec in Montreal), Hervé Tilly (IH2EF) and Daniel Wisniewski (EFFEE) will present the scientific focus and objectives of the seminar.

The inaugural lecture, from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., (in English) will be given by Jim Spillane (Northwestern University, Chicago), who analyses educational leadership practice from a distributed perspective linked to issues of educational equity.

From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Research Panel I (in French), moderated by France Gravelle, will explore the transition from theory to practice in distributed leadership.

The morning continues from 11:30 to 12:15 (in English) with a lecture by Melanie Ehren (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) on the evaluation and use of data by educational leaders in Europe.

Leadership, inclusion and 21st-century skills development

 

The second day explores the conditions for professional development of school management teams in complex and comparative educational contexts.

From 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. (in English), Christopher Day (University of Nottingham) looks back on thirty years of research devoted to school leaders and the management of organisational complexity.

 

Research Panel III (in French), from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m., moderated by Lyne Martel, examines leadership training and development in several national contexts.

From 10:45 to 11:45, Research Panel V (in English and French), chaired by Romuald Normand, will present an international comparison of leadership practices.

The morning session concludes from 11:45 to 12:30 (in English) with a lecture by Stephan Huber (University of Linz)  who presents a strategic approach to leadership focused on equity, innovation and sustainable development.

📅Wednesday, 18 March 2026

School leadership in the 21st century: shared perspectives and horizons

The final day will be devoted to forward-looking discussions on the future of educational leadership at the international level.

 

From 8:30 to 9:10 a.m.,Rick Mintrop (University of California, Berkeley) on problem solving as a lever for sustainable development in school management.

From 9:10 to 9: 45 a.m., Mika Risku (University of Jyväskylä) analyses the Finnish model of collaborative leadership.

From 10:00 to 11:00 (in English and French), the stakeholder panel, moderated by Frédérique Cauchi-Bianchi, brings together Petra Van Haren, Sylvia Pesini, Sylvain Bégué, Danielle Boucher and Patrice Lemoine to discuss the institutional and professional challenges of school leadership in Europe and internationally.

 

The closing scientific lecture, from 11:00 to 11:30 (in English), will be given by Lejf Moos (Aarhus University), who will present a summary and outlook for research and public policy.

 

Finally, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Professional Panel II (in French), moderated by Bruno Benazech, will give the floor to Xavier Verriest, Carole Chaîne, Vincent Barbarroux and Oriane Cochand to draw the main lessons from the seminar from a practitioner's perspective.
